History

The cave and brewery were built around 1865/6 and by 1881 was producing 2,000 barrels of the frothy good stuff a year and was located near Colborne and Palace Streets.  The Funk brewery folded in 1901 and soon all traces of the former brewery were erased by time and the ever changing environment of the city renewing itself.

History Found on Hollow Hills.

The Exploration

Originally we had biked over to St. Paul for a different mission which had turned out a complete failure. I decided since the night was still young we should check out Funk since we were in the area.

So we biked over to West 7th and proceeded through our normal entrance to that area. If you've explored that area you probably know what I am talking about.

After entering we crawled through an old partially Sandstone partially old Rock Brick entrance into the Funk Brewery Cave. I had been here once before on the way to Stahlmanns. Myth and Lush had not. So it was a fun trip.

Most of Funk was collapsed in from the construction of new Homes above. What remained was just one corridor. After thoroughly exploring it we decided there wasnt much more to do.

It might be one of the smallest caves in the Twin Cities area but its still a beautiful cave. It has so many different layers and textures, different designs and forms. Many Urban Photographers would agree with me when I say that Funk is a great little cave to do Photo Ops, Natural Exposed Shots, and Tea Light Candle shots.

After reading a couple other postings about Funk, theres reason to go back since supposedly a 2nd and more extensive sublevel exists. Guess we'll be going back!
